One of my colleagues taught a PMP Prep course in early April, and one of the candidates in her class took and passed the online exam.

Here is the un-edited feedback from that individual:

"First of all, I learned that if you have an in-person exam scheduled, you will not see the online option. In order to see it, you need to cancel your exam (Fees are waved for now), and then re-apply and you will see the option.

I will do a quick bullet list of things that are good to know:

• you require a working webcam and microphone
• you can not have your phone near you during the test
• the test is open 30 minutes before to allow you to do the check-in process, which I will detail below
o it performs a systems test to ensure your internet speed is sufficient, and that you have a working microphone and webcam.
o they make you take pictures of your face, your ID (drivers license, etc) and 4 pictures of your desk area (front, back, left, right)
o you sign disclaimers about not sharing details of the test, etc.
• there is a tutorial at the beginning that lets you get used to the provided calculator and whiteboard (YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED A PHYSICAL CALCULATOR OR SCRATCH PAD/PEN)
o the whiteboard has plenty of functionality, and allows you to use text, which would allow the “brain dump”
o here’s an overview of the feature https://home.pearsonvue.com/op/online-proc...eboard-overview
o unfortunately the calculator must be operated with the mouse. It does not interact with your keyboard
• they make you download and install an application (OnVue) which, once the test begins takes over your full screen
• highlight/strike through options are available, but the application makes you highlight the text, and then choose strikeout or highlight (there are keyboard functions, but they are not very intuitive. I think highlight was Alt+J for example)
• There is a chat function at the top. If you click it, it calls a proctor (they won’t be immediate). I did this at the beginning just to see the feature, not realizing how it worked. They just wished me luck, and I proceeded??. This function would be used by the proctor in case of technical issues. If they could not reach you there, they would reach out via phone (this is your only exception to the phone rule)
• just a tidbit, because I was unsure – I had snacks beside me on my desk and ate them along the way, as well as water of course. They did not raise any concerns.
• The 10 minute break allowed me to use the restroom and stretch a bit. I only used around 4 minutes.

Aside from that, the interface is pretty intuitive. Everything I explained above is walked through in the tutorial.

For more information on it, here’s a link. In fact, this is where you need to go to take the test when it’s time!

It would be great if others who have taken the PMP exam online in the near term could share their experiences!

Hi Ramy, or anybody else :)

For personal computer issues reasons, my PMP exam was cancelled in the middle of it, mid-June. Since that PearsonVUE and the PMI had offer me a new chance "for free", but I didn't try to restart training and passing it. What do you reckon in term of self training website or app. I already had all the classes and Videos. I don't want to restart a full training for 230$. I just want a self training app for maxi 30$ - 50$ (€) just to make me remember. It seems that PM PrepCast and RMC Solutions don't have such possibility.

In advance thank you for your advise.

I am not aware of any program like this. I suggest you go for PM Prep Cast simulation exams as it will refresh your memory but that's my opinion.

Hi PMF,
I passed my PMP last week with Above Target result through self study. In the last month f the exam do simulation-pmbok-simulation-pmbok alternatively. I followed only pmbok because I've seen different videos, study material and simulations all deviate 20-40% from the pmp exam scope. Refer different free simulation tests but try to understand what's out of scope for the exam. Any single word which is not written in pmbok don't prepare for the exam just for example Maslow's hierarchy which is nowhere in pmbok so don't try to remember and assess yourself on such topics for exam purpose. Only PMBOK and free 200 simulation test questions by PMI are the best study material to refer.
All the best for your exam.

I just recently passed my PMP exam through online proctored exam. The experiences were below:

1. The exam provider (Pearson VUE) will send you an email with an instructions on how to log-in for the exam.

2. I will suggest that you will test your computer and internet connection using the software provided in the website. Instructions will be given on how to do it. You have to make sure that you will be using the same computer and internet connection during the exam.

3. One of the requirement is to have a room that has only one door. Once the exam will start, NO one will be allowed to go in.

4. I used my laptop built-in camera and audio. And I positioned myself with the door room was behind me.

5. You will have to take photo of your surrounding. I was connected by Ethernet cable. During the taking of photo of my surrounding, I have a difficulty due to my wired connection. So, I suggest to make sure to have a longer Ethernet cable or just connect to a WiFi connection with a full bar signal. I used the wired connection because I have some issue on my WiFi connection and also I want to make sure that my connection will not be interrupted.

6. Make sure the room is well lit so that it will be easy for you to take photo of yourself and Identification card or passport.

7. It will be best to have a table that is only your laptop on top of it.

8. Other than number 5, the online exam was so smooth and convenient.

9. I took the 10 minute break for nature call. I have checked a week before on how many glass of water that I will drink in order to control my body liquids because you can only go out during the break.

10. Good luck on your exam.

I did my online PMP exam four days ago and I've passed. It was a great experience.

In my opinion, the two main pros are:
1- The place you used to sit in will give you more confidence.
2- The 10 minutes break is what I needed.

However, I think the main cons are:
1- The inability to revise the first part of the exam (after the break).
2- The surrounded noise.
3- The fear of losing the internet while doing the exam.

In general, I didn't feel a big difference between the two experiences (Prometric and in-home), as this was my second attempt.

Do you think online exam will be an option in the future?

Hi, I passed the online PMP exam yesterday, overall it was a good experience.

The check in process was pretty smooth, the only part I feel PMI might want to improve is prompt response from proctors. I texted the proctor once during the exam for asking some exam-relevant questions but didn't get responses shortly. Again, overall, it was smooth and good experience.

There was a glitch with my exam where the proctor had to call me to solve it. The video went blank in my case. So the proctor told me to restart the pc. During the call the time counter of the exam went running. So we have to be careful that we respond to the proctor instruction fast. Thankfully proctor solved the issue and i was able to restart the test from where i had left.

Just a few additional notes from my online ACP exam:
* You cannot have multiple monitors on your exam-taking computer
* If working from a laptop, plug/pair a mouse
* The pictures around the test area are to show that you don't have close access to prohibited items (phone, calculator, books,...)
* Nobody else is allowed in the exam area while the exam is underway.
* Your cam and mic will be on for the duration of the exam.
* Do not cover your face with your hands.
* Make sure you have layers of clothing. (I was in the basement and started getting cold after an hour.)
SUPER helpful to know multiple screens aren't allowed. I wonder why their software can't monitor both? Really too bad-my laptop has a small screen and use the larger one constantly.

Hi All,

I passed the online PMP exam over the weekend so thought to share my experience and tips with you.

1) Before scheduling the exam, perform the basic system test provided on Pearson's website to ensure your computer meets the requirements. Once scheduled, repeat the system test regularly particularly in the last few days before the exam.

2) On exam day, log in 30 minutes before the scheduled start time to perform the final system test and complete the online check-in process as you may encounter delays/issues uploading pictures of yourself and the desk area.

3) Make sure you are sitting in a comfortable location and wear the right type of clothing incase it gets cold, etc.

4) You are not allowed any food or drink but check with the proctor if you can keep some water next to you.

5) I found the quick tutorial useful in understanding how to use the highlight and strikethrough functionalities along with the in-built calculator.

6) Prepare your strategy beforehand in terms of how you will manage the time, formula based questions, difficult questions, etc. and follow it through. Also, keep an eye on the timer incase you fall behind and do not leave sufficient time for the second part of the exam.

7) Make use of the break (after 90 questions) to stretch your legs and use the restroom if needed. Plus it will be good to give the eyes a little break as the exam conditions can be intense.

8) Once you submit the second part, you will see an instant message confirming your result and finally you will be asked if you would like to complete the survey on your experience.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend it to others.

Lastly, feel free to contact me if you are currently preparing for the exam and would like some advice or support.
