Can we just stop saying the "C" word?

The "C" word of course being COVID-19 or the coronavirus. It seems almost every news story, post, even product or service being sold has the coronavirus banner waving. Millions of jobs lost, crumbling economies, ridiculous restrictions and of course the death toll are surely enough to remind us of the "C" word. The media and social media pariah’s fill our every waking moment with a mixture of "C" word facts, falsehoods and propaganda. I am not arguing the validity of such information; merely the sheer volume of it.

I wrote about this a couple of weeks back: https://www.projectmanagement.com/blog-pos...ate-on-COVID-19

The media will do what they can to sell advertising space and to increase mindshare. That doesn't mean we need to slavishly follow everything they are repeating.

Everything in moderation...
Thanks Kiron. I think COVID-19 doesn't pass the "moderation" test.

Maybe we will have to adapt our lives to the new normality, with the virus present everywhere.
Yes I imagine it's going to be around for a few years yet.

Its to be expected that politicians and the press are focused only on the current pandemic.

However, as project managers we have to take it in stride and focus on delivering our projects. Use this time to work out our recovery plan, consider different scenarios so that we are ready to react when the time comes.

Rework our schedules, our costs, possible quality issues, staffing, material availability and delivery. Note that the pandemic may have influenced other project risks and available mitigation options.

In some cases the project business case may have to be re-visited. Is the project still viable? Have we missed our opportunity? Are our stakeholders still on board? Will our stakeholders remain financially sustainable?

Now is the time for the Project Manager to earn his wages.

For me I changed perspectives and I see this as just another disruption. As such there are uncertainties, and ups and downs.
We discussed disruptions before, in the technology and business space, some lost, some won. This disruption helps to speed up things. And I agree, it is leading into a new world order. Not sure if it will be a new normal.

As uncertainty persists, it is human to look for answers and be open to new networks and information. I learned a lot in the past weeks and met a bunch of new good people.

The only major thing that bothers me is that we as project managers are not really relevant in helping other to get more secure. We might handle it as a threat to our projects, but I fail to see opportunities we grasp.
Hi Thomas, I would tend to agree with you however I do believe that some opportunities will arise in the field of health and security.
I also believe that will be increased demand for the development of applications that will permit tracking of patients and things of the sort.

We already have an app released by the government called COVIDsafe. Several million people have already downloaded it, but we require around 10 million people (approx. 40% of the population) to make it effective.

I wish we could stop saying the word. That could actually be done quite easily. But the elephant will not leave the room in a long, long time. It has impacted every single facet of our lives. At work, at home, in our social lives, in our family live, in our own deep soul, in our shopping habits, sports habits... the list goes on and on. It is actually hard to find an aspect where the c-word has not messed around. And when this first wave will be over, a second and even third wave will likely hit, just like it has happened with every other pandemic.

In summary, we can stop saying the damned word, but its effects will hang around in a long time. Stay safe everyone and for those who have it, enjoy labor day.
