A. The role of the project manager changes to a facilitator in predictive
environments.
B. The role of the project manager changes to a facilitator in adaptive
environments.
C. The role of the project manager does not change.
D. The role of the project manager is replaced with a scrum master in
adaptive environments

As per PMBOK page 178- C is right answer

As per PMBOK page 41 (Agile section) Option D looks right.

Can anyone clarify which option is more correct as given scenario and why?

Certain activities performed by a PM might change, especially if they are leading a large project broken into multiple agile teams, each with their own agile team lead (e.g. Scrum Master, XP Coach).

The essence of the role won't change but "how" they fulfill the obligations of the role may.

A scrum master is not comparable to a PM because a SM does not manage projects, programmes of work or people, rather they act as a facilitator and mentor to teams.

C looks more like denial rather than reality.

Agile teams often operate without PMs but the assumption here is that a PM (or perhaps even a former-PM) will play a part. If they do then I think B matches most closely with my experience. Some PMs do actually slip into the role of agile champion, coach and troubleshooter quite successfully.

PMBoK defines a PM as 'the person assigned by the performing organization to lead the team that is responsible for achieving the project objectives' (3.2).

This person may have other roles, e.g. be the scrum master or the product owner in an agile environment. A Scrum Master might not have the qualification and experience for being a PM.

So I would go with C as the best answer.

First of all, predictive and adaptative are life cycle models. Life cycle process are created on the models like waterfall, iterative, incremental, etc. Second, Scrum is a framework based on iterative-incremental (which some people call agile) life cycle process. Third, you can create your own life cycle process/method based on adaptative models (I did that for using in my actual work place). Four, Scum Master is a role when some company use Scrum and not for others methods. Five, is a surprise for me that what you stated is inside the PMBOK (I will check but I do not remember). What is the definition of project manager? "Project Manager. The person assigned by the performing organization to lead the team that is responsible for achieving the project objectives" (from the PMI“s lexicon of terms). Then, nothing inside about the style. Then, if what you stated is inside the standards then is time to report an error to the PMI.
