I have seen that many people do not participate in discussion or share there opinion, but just add a comment as "I agree", "Good point", "Good Question" etc.
In my opinion we already have voting option to agree or appreciating a feedback. So we such commnet should be avoided.
I feel there should a validation on minimum length of comment in discussions to avoid such comments and people should also use the forum to share opinion or debate or learn from queries and discussion.
I seek opinion from other members how they see these non value add comments and should there be a method to avoid them? Saving Changes...

Hi Tarun - While we all certainly strive to offer as much value as possible with our contributions, we also should recognize that simply having engagement is one of the primary elements of a community. If we begin to confine the engagement of others with too much criteria, we may find that more harm is done than good.
Not everyone who contributes is always very outgoing, or, not every contributor is an expert in all areas, but still want to remain engaged and share whatever opinion they have.
I guess my point is, while this topic has come up several times, my opinion is that our goal should be to strive for engagement, period. Is it always ideal? Maybe not. But do we have engaged members? Yes. A community is driven by engagement. There is always opportunity to take a proactive approach and facilitate further discussion to elicit additional information or opinions from the community to bolster the discussion.
Thank you for being an active member of our community. We look forward to your continued engagement.

Thank you Andrew for your opinion.
I agree with you, that it is good for engaging people.
But what I felt, it would be good if people share there opinion or use voting option to avoid non value add comments.
As you mentioned we might not be expert, but keep discussing and sharing helps.

Engagement for the sake of appearing to be engaged adds little value to anyone.
It is also quite frustrating to see a thread flagged as being recently updated only to find it was a necro-post which was resurrected with a "I agree" reply.
It is accepted that only a very small percentage of the members of most communities will actively participate so I'd value quality over quantity.
I agree :) kidding ...
But seriously, sometimes this is frustrating.
However, let me share my own experience. I have read an article and found it really good. At that moment, I didnt have anything to add but wanted to share my appreciation to the writer. I recall I have explained what I liked in his text more than adding additional stuff to what he or she had written. I don't know if this can be considered added value? Did I mean to fill in an empty text box ? or to appear? Not at all. Should I just use the Vote icon? I could, but felt that my vote would be more personalized if I write it down than just a simple click...

Soha,
Thank you for sharing your view.
For an article may be I will agree that, it may not be much which you want to comment on and adding an short appreciation comment is still okay.
But In a discussion forum like this, people should participate in discussion, so that it add value to discussion and we learn different perspective which may help us or others.
If some one want to appreciate use the voting button.
As Kiron mentioned it is not good to see such comments when we follow a thread to have some good discussion.

I think instead of stopping readers to add non-value-added comments, this site designer should add more functional buttons at the end of each article next to "Subscribe to this item" control such as "Thank you", "Like", and "Dislike". This will help to resolve this issue, help to engage readers, and to provide feedback to content contributors. Saving Changes...

Dear Tarun
Avoidance or control of Non Value comments can be achieved by following
1) Ensure Capable anchor for the discussions
2) Context and the subject shall be clearly explained to audiance or team
3)The subject of discussions should have linear flow as far as possible to ensure focus of the team members
4)setting of some ground rules of the meeting will help --where you can set some working agreements about how to respond or get engaged for the team. This will make clear the expectation from the team members. We know in a meeting there is possibility of having varieties like explorer, shopper, vacationer and prisoner. So make it clear at the beginning itself that meeting expects concrete comments on the issues involved and can be given at the end of say of the speaker with a dicipline one at a time.
This protocol will help avoidance of non value add comments

Dear Tarun
Sorry .I misread it.
I agree with you that i also find many comments such as "i agree" or "OK" as response to an issue raised.
1)May be one can be explicit in wording the issue in unambiguous way and if need be breakdown the subject issue into subissues for clarity.
2)At the end, request for further discussion or solution as the reader perceives to the said issue.--in the words like views solicited or pro and and against opinions are welcome.
I think this forum is for good amount of participation from the members so that micro level issues involved would surface and there would be value addition to subject if possible.
Regards
Mohan

Hi Tarun,
I agree with you that non value add comments do not help neither the poster of the discussion, or the community.
The question is what is the root cause for such behaviour? Having measures in place to limit and "enforce" may help, but will not deal with the real reason behind. Could it be because people are posting for gaining benefits from showing activity, as Kiron said?
Or could it be because we are changing our way to communicate, now more and more online. We are trying to be active on many online platforms, in a hurry to express our opinion, that very often we do not even think through what we write and how. Not to mention, that I personally am missing the old fashion way of having a proper greeting at the beginning of the posts, it shows to me some kind of personalisation and engagement to the poster.
May be having a statement describing the "rules" upon which this discussion forum operates help to eliminate such non value add comments. Saving Changes...
