How do you motivate the project team?

Hi - to me I talk with the individuals and determine what motivates them - some its recognition, some its a reward, etc.

I had a team member that I just couldn't get to do his work. He constantly made excuses, missed deadlines, and wouldn't communicate the issues. I talked with him and found that he was motivated by power - he liked to control things. So, I found tasks that were within his role, and asked him to run with them and provide weekly updates - this worked well for me. I also gained trust and a better relationship with him for future projects.

Many good techniques are available.

Understand in order to influence behavior, you need to motivate and to enable (they have the skills and know-how, tools, infrastructure, empowerment etc).

It is also important to remember that no one can motivate a team or team member. You can inspire them, but motivation comes from within. As such, understanding what can spark motivation might give you the insights you seek.

I'd recommend the books of Lencioni, Pink and Gostick...
