Actually I teach that the knowledge area of integration management is the backbone of each project. The 7 processes in it exist in every project as a spine, and you add limbs like risk management, quality management etc.
So, the 7 processes are, in other words, and they iterate throughout the project - finding out there is a project (once) - show and design the way ahead - learn along the way and teach - work and create artifacts - make sure that changes do not overwhelm - compare actuals to planning, recognize and handle deviations - close orderly (once)

There is no possibility to survive as program manager if the program manager do no work and behave with systemic thinking as a driver which is the way integration takes place in a natural way.

Again a good topic to bring in for discussion.
I will agree with Thomas and Sergio and you also.
Integration management more or less define the key flow and expectation of project and program management. Saving Changes...

In my view Process of Integration is screening- common point through which interaction of all the supporting activities ,component project activities ,program management Plan and Program goverenance takes place , Where all the balancing act vis a vis variations/gaps get revealed and induced corrections are advised to be carried out for alignment the business case and governance, while ensuring successful delivery the delivery of components, Program outcome and benefits. The key lies in integration in navigating the program or project through the life cycle including sustainment and and transition,in tune with the business case with an eye on exceeding the likely/planned benefits. Any slips here will be impacting the out come very adversely

Having worked in organizations named some variation of Engineering Integration for many years, I tend to look at it as a technical function rather than a PM function, however the two become very closely related. This is where your technical PMs and systems engineers (not "IT Systems") work.
Some projects are limited to individual engineering disciplines and are worked internally by that team but once they cross multiple teams, which is often the case, they are led by an integration function.
Integration projects can be quite broad ranging so they are often program focused. Process and requirement changes for example may touch multiple products or even programs and thus multiple ongoing projects. For that reason, I tend to look at them more of program-centric than project-centric.
If I were to consider classic management models where project and product management are distinct roles, I still tend to look at the integration on the product side, rather than focused on the PM knowledge areas. Where integration is focused on the PM role, it's process integration which is its own technical knowledge domain. Saving Changes...
