Hi,
I am an IT project manager with experience mostly in CRM, however I would like to transition into a project management role in real estate development or construction. Yet, I have no construction experience. I have worked in real estate development doing acquisitions and analysis years ago. I also have a RE brokers license. How can I go about making such a transition?

Hi,

I made the transition 2 year’s ago, but moved back to IT after 9 months. During the 9 months I worked for a professional services firm specialising in construction project management. I found the move challenging, but not in the way I expected. I thought that learning about construction methods and terminology would be a steep learning curve, but I actually found that the difficulties lay in the perceptions of my colleagues and clients.

I found that I was frequently given training and consulting projects rather than construction projects. When I quizzed the MD he explained that my lack of an engineering degree meant that he found it difficult to 'sell' me to prospective clients. However, because I am Prince 2, APMP and MSP qualified he could send me out on consultancy engagements and to run training sessions.

In the end I left because it became clear that I wasn't going to be given the opportunity to manage a construction project.

I suggest you approach a large firm that is not reliant on outside clients, perhaps property or office development they should be in a position to give you the opportunity to learn on small in-house projects.

If you decide to make the move I wish you the very best of luck.
