Project Normalization

Has anyone heard of or done Project Normalization? From what I can gather, it's the act of breaking the project down to more discernable and unique components and follows the concepts of a normalized database. If you have done something along these lines, what were your experiences (good and/or bad), challenges, and did it provide any gains?
