Dear Jonathan
In very simple terms he is Manager of Project managers.
Having said it, PGM role is much bigger in responsibility and bredth and width. He is responsible for not only output of projects but for the outcome of projects as a whole and the integrated benefits to be delivered and to ensure proper systematic transition takes place with respective business owners so that benefits would get sustained and realised .
In this comparison project manager shoulders much lesser risk and is responsible only for the project output or product of that project.

Program manager focus on managing group of projects.
Product manager focus on managing the product, defines requisites, tests, plans the roadmap, answers customers questions and doubts.
My role on most of the projects i manage is more a program manager than a project manager? Why?
I do have in my team people that manage the IT, Engineering, Customer Support, Marketing, Product management
My "project team" is actually composed of project managers, each have and manage their teams. Saving Changes...
