I have been working around 7 years as PM in Telecom industry. Now I am looking for a new job and want to change industry towards finance and especially banks. In any job posting they ask requirements like proven experience in handling projects with banks or at least having diploma in finance. I got graduated as Electronics Engineer. It is supposed that any PM and especially PMP certified should have the ability to work in whatever industry ( Finance, construction, pharmacy, entertainment, etc... Ok now I am preparing in order to pass the PMP but how to be able to convince employers that I have the ability to take the challenge although never worked in that different industry while having only a PMP certification ? Thanks.

I was in your situations and thanks God or any other force that people think governs the universe I got the job. What I did in those situations is to demonstrate in the interview I have knowledge about the domain (external environment), the architecture (internal environment, Zachman framework will help you as a guide) and mainly about the ability to help that people in creating the solution they expected. The only thing it is difficult to pass is to be consider for the interview. No matter that, I sent my CV with a letter trying to be concise but effective in the later according to what I got as informaiton in the job post. Remember: is not about what you think or what you feel, is about how the others perceived the value you can deliver in the job position.

Many Thanks Sergio. I will take into account your suggestions. Yes you are right I need to add to each CV a motivation letter showing my ability to deliver the solution they are needing according to the job post.

Mounir,
I made the jump from healthcare technology to managing the PMO at a biotech company. I have this 80/20 theory when it comes to project management and the various industries; 80% of what I bring can be of value in any industry and the other 20% is industry-specific that I need to learn. Focus on the 80%; ability to deliver results, teamwork/collaboration, communication at all levels, negotiation, etc. Assuming you get the interview, research the industry so you can speak to it. When you start at the new company, spend time with the "doers" to understand their job and ask questions.
Good luck!
Jason

I agree with Jason. I am also trying to switch industry, and i have been rejected many times for the say , i don't have same industry experience. So, I started applying for volunteering roles/intern roles in the similar industry. I think this can help but yes the industry specific knowledge can be gained with due course of time and this should be help you convince the recruiters.

Having PMP just help to tell recruiters that you have experience and knowledge in project management, you should demonstrate your knowledge in the industry that you are going to apply to. To convince them, you should do a small research to acquire knowledge and attach a letter with your CV as Sergio did.

Thank you Nguyen for your consideration. From the different replies that I have received I have two options either acquire overall knowledge on the new industry I am applying or eventually if there is a possibility volunteer on that new Industry. But whatever situation I think Recruiter will always give priority to a PM already having worked on the industry instead of a PM coming from outside domain
