Is it just me, or has anyone wondered what the differences are between the two, other than the aesthetic? Interestingly, JIRA is a paid product and Trello has free version when they're by the same company, and look so strikingly similar. Saving Changes...

Hi Jonathan,
I'm not quire sure of the similarity in the current date.
Based on my experience, I determined they are designed for different purpose, and different in; at least; their GUI.
However, I experienced in Trello in a couple years ago but Jira in current year.
Cheers. Saving Changes...

Jira has also started to offer a free version. Trello is a customizable Kanban board that is used by many industries. Simply, you can customize the column heading and thus it opens a lot of opportunities.
Jira supports both Agile and Scrum Methodologies. It is mainly used for tracking bugs and issues. The product has evolved a great deal and by enabling integration with several other products, you can turn it into a complete application lifecycle management system. Saving Changes...

As our fellow members mentioned in this discussion, Jira is more sophisticated. It is more dynamic in the sense that it has configurable workflows that can have various transitions, statuses with innumerable things happening during those transitions with a number of stakeholders and various fields that are contained in Jira tickets, related and unrelated. It is all the more powerful when used with Atlassian apps (add-ons). Jira is project based and its tickets can have assignees based on user groups and roles.
Trello is more like a planning tool with various statuses in Kanban style. The options in a Trello board are limited. But as it had a potential to rival Jira, though questionable, Atlassian acquired it and is making constant improvements to support the not too tech savvy customer base.
