Should there be a goal to set the scene for the planning? Does the goal arise from items that are at the top of the backlog?
Is sprint planning just a process of selection, or do you go on and create that all important plan?

The goal is usually defined during sprint planning but you might expect the product owner at least to have an idea before the meeting starts. The first part of sprint planning is about selecting the work to be done, the second half is about making the plan.

Sprint goals are established by POs at a higher level than specific product backlog items. One would hope that the highest priority backlog items will align with the goals.

Sprint planning is a combination of defining and communicating sprint goals and then selecting sufficient work to fit the team's ability to deliver in the upcoming sprint.

I see where one young boy has just passed 500 hours sitting in a treetop. There is a good deal of discussion as to what to do with a civilization that produces prodigies like that. Wouldn't it be a good idea to take his ladder away from him and leave him up there?
