What is the greatest fear of the Project Manager / Scrum Master? Does it change as one gains experience? How does it differ between organizations and industries?

More importantly, what can reasonably be done?

Fear is a personal thing so I don't believe you can generalize this to a role. For some, it might be letting down their team whereas for others, dissatisfying their customers. And for most, it might be losing their jobs!

I agree with Kiron. Fear is different between persons, according to their particular personality and characteristics. Nowadays, we have experimented generalized fear since COVID-19 pandemic has changed our normal life, but a Project Manager must be prepared for any situation and take advantage of it, innovating and tailoring processes to emerge with success.

That reminds me of the joke of the two friends who went camping in the woods and started discussing what they'd do if a bear attacked them. The first tells the second "I'm not sure that I can outrun a bear". The second replies "I'm not worried - I just have to outrun you!"

It really depends on the role/company. Obviously, we all try to do risk management and make contingency plans but there's always unknown unknowns.
