well, to me
PMP cert could make the cert holder be more confidently applying knowledge to their projects. At the same time, it could increase level of confidentiality of an employer that his/her PMs are leading the performing organisation's project in a accurate way. Saving Changes...

PMP and any other Certification is erect an indication that the person have in depth knowledge about the subject or domain but in no way it implies that someone is capable of successfully managing a project.

Possession of any kind of certificate indicates your interest and commitment to the subject matter but successful project management comes with practice.

Deepak,
I agree with Rami, PM certificates are proof that the person has theoretical knowledge about project management.
Many people assume that the PMP will be door opener to the profession, however the reality, as per my personal experience is different.
If I am to hire a PM, PMP will be just a proof that the person is aware of PM theory, but my final decision will be based on the practice and results, as well as lessons learned from real projects.

Deepak,
for me it gave me understanding what project management is (in 1998 after 10 years leading projects), a lot of hints where to deep dive and try out tools (e.g. earned value, critical chain, team building), and from there a lot of confidence which showed in discussions with sponsors and clients and peers.
PMI publishes a salary survey which states that PMPs earn 10% more than non-PMPs, approximately.
While there is a requirement to have 3 years of PM experience before you are allowed to take the exam, I fully agree that after PMP you built the rocket launcher to lift off.

I've heard that PMP certification means you were able to pass the PMP test, and that you understand the concepts of project management. It doesn't mean you are an expert in the field of project management. Saving Changes...

As someone who has done Project Management before earning the PMP, when starting studying for it, I understood a lot of things in a better way. What I did intuitively on previous projects was put in the right place in my brain and doing it consciously now makes me better organised and more structured.
I believe that having the certification earlier would not have helped me a lot as I would not have understood well everything (I would have probably just memorize everything) but with the past experience on projects the PMP allowed me to clearly see where I lacked expertise and what I did well in Project Management and I also have been able to identify areas of improvement. But this is for my own situation as I always learn by doing first.
Other than that, a lot of job offers for PM roles requires a PMP certification and in a lot of cases this allows you to score a first interview. It will not provide you directly with a high paying job as experience is key in most roles. Saving Changes...
