Alan D. Orr mentions in his book "Advanced Project Management" 4 key elements for successful project management. They are:
1) stakeholder engagement
2) roles and responsibilities
3) business case
4) identifying activities with long lead times.
Dayo Sowunmi in his book, "Leadership is Mental, How to Excel as a Project Leader" adds a 5th element to Alan D. Orr's list, which is
5) any lessons learned
Dayo believes this list of 5 elements will increase one's hand at winning a Flush, like in Poker, thereby increasing the likelihood of achieving successful project outcomes.
Would be great to know if anyone has their own list of top 4 or 5 elements for a successful project. Or, if you want to add on to this current list of 5. Saving Changes...
Strong organizational support for successful delivery of the project and having the RIGHT people with sufficient capacity, capability and commitment are also critical.

The entire purpose of management is to manage risk. Risk management is not an element of management it is management. Keep in mind that risk management includes both positive and negative risk - not only mitigate what could go wrong but also enhance benefits, create situations for the betterment of the project.
