Which are the best practices to drive a project to successful project execution.

Here i am specifically referring to "Drivers" both in terms of resources and technology and how to identify these drivers.

I think there are many drivers, but the most important one for me is the people on the team and the sponsor. A strong sponsor and good senior executive stakeholders set the direction and the tone for the project and are key to giving the project team the best possible chance for success.

For a PM standard activities are pretty straight forward so just follow them as per Organization process . But Best practices includes some point which are not listed in CMM processes which are key driver like leadership skills, managing and understanding resources, relieve stress from Stakeholders and team, understand customers etc.

For me, a leader with a strong vision is key. Could be the sponsor, a Product Manager, or the Project Manager; depends on the scenario, but they should be part of the weekly team routine.
After that, a strong and motivating PM, using a rigorous framework so that everyone knows where they are.

Hey Matt, I also believe in that a strong vision can make things work. Can you please share your experiences of the same. How it could be communicated and practiced.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Alok,
PMBoK is the Best Practice but I suspect you want more than the standard PM practices, I agree with the replies below vision and enthusiasm are great team drivers. Know you people and what motivates them also helps get good performance,

I tell my teams that as a project manager I have two roles, that of sheep dog - I round everyone up and make sure that they are all going in the same direction and secondly I am the "Draino", I clear blockages that slow them down!

Hope this help
Cheers Julie
