Hello everyone,

I find the Quality management knowledge area to be the most elusive and vague topic in the PMBoK and the most difficult to explain to project management students . I am looking for a textbook (or anything close to it) that approaches the topic with a hands-on approach rather than a theoretical one. It would be nice to find some real life scenarios about how PMPs implement Quality management processes and use the tools on their projects.

Regards,

A lot of the QM content derives from the lean/quality movements which originated in manufacturing based on the work of Toyota, GE and other quality leaders.

As such, basic books on lean would give you a good grounding in the subject matter.

Check Rita Mulcahy’s Exam PrepCast book, I find it approaches quality from a more practical angle.

Is not elusive. It is because project quality is based on quality theory. The core is Deming because the PDCA look which has been taken as the model by the PM.
To teach it you have to be familiar with all the theory, which, between others authors you have to read:
-Phillip Crosby, "Quality is free"
-Joseph Juran, "Quality by Design"
-Edwards Deming, "Out of the Crisis, Quality, Productivity and Competitive Position"
-Genichi Taguchi, “Off line quality control”.
-Armand V. Feigenbaum, "Quality Seven M"
-Walter Shewhart, “Statistical Method from the viewpoint of Quality control”.
-ISO 9000 family and ISO 10006 and 14000
I am saying it because I am teaching project management from lot time ago.

I recently did a quality management course, and the textbook Project Quality Management: What, Why and How by Kenneth Rose was excellent. We studied the quality management pioneers and their theories, so it is likely that (like Sergio said) having that kind of understanding helped me to grasp the PMBOK's Project Quality Management chapter. I also read the Rita Mulcahy's PrepCast book that was recommended by Rami, and it helped a lot.

My first recommendation is Rita for PMP preparation, because that is its purpose and so it is written accordingly. If you still don't understand, try the Kenneth Rose textbook.

I hope you find the resources to help you!

I agree. But is what you need to know to teach quality in project management and is what you need to know to work with quality in the practice. In my case I work on quality, mainly in system, IT and software domain, from long time ago so I have read them and I have learn the use of them in the practice along the years. Things are different is you like to teach a PMP credential preparation exam.

You seem very eager to dismiss everyone else's ideas without providing any of your own.

Your initial question was about how teaching quality is an elusive subject. Sergio gave you several sources who have spent their entire careers trying to address that very question.

You say it's all just "theory". Do you have a better theory that we can all learn from?

Hi Keith,

Thank you for replying. I am not dismissing anyone's ideas. Actually I am very grateful and humbled with the help I am getting.

I am sorry if I gave the wrong impression that theory is not important. No sane person would say that!. All the suggested books are excellent.

I'm just asking if someone has written a practical/applied book about Quality on a real project. For example: I have decided to use this tool to find so and so and this is how I implemented this concept.
