Due to resource challenges, a technology vendor is late with a critical project deliverable. There is a 20 percent buffer in the budget for cost overruns. What should the project manager do next to mitigate this issue?
A. Replace the current vendor and ask the new vendor to send a contract.
B. Assess alternative vendors that can support project deliverables regardless of resource
C. Discuss the legal implications of this slippage with the vendor.
D. Accept the cost overrun and update the project schedule.
Answer is B.
According to me answer should be C , as PM should discuss with the vendor before proceeding to change the vendor. Ethically, vendor should know that PM may change vendor if he misses delivery.
Please can someone help me understand why B is better option than C Saving Changes...
This is a pretty poor question - A & B are virtually the same as B would lead to A. There is no indication of a relationship between the deliverable timing and cost implications so D can be eliminated. I'd agree with you that C is the best of a poor set of choices - I don't know that I'd use the term "legal implications" though as it would be better to refer to the contract regarding schedule delays on key deliverables first and speak directly with the vendor.

I couldn't agree more with Kiron's feedback. It is surprising to see such questions in the Study Hall but hey Kiron, maybe we are old school :-)

Hi Bhavna,
Kiron is quite insightful and indicting too??... the contract that binds the vendor and the project manager. Ethically it's needful that the PM talks with the vendor and assess the situation before considering option B

Agreed. The ethical considerations seem to be completely absent from the programmed answer.

Bhavna, I'm preparing for my PMP exam. I'm having regular cognitive conflicts with Study Hall. Have you had difficulties with many other questions? It seems like a good tool to prepare, but if the questions aren't valid, it may actually make preparation more difficult. Saving Changes...
