Scrum in practice using demo project

Hello,

I am looking to put into practice some of the learning on Scrum.
Plan to use a demo product development idea and try the various events, artifacts and rules of Scrum. In addition, use a tool like Jira (or similar) to automated some of the events and get familiar with some of its features.

I have tried searching for an agile group to connect but couldn't find any. If you have done something similar before, I would definitely like to hear your experience & learning. Any ideas & suggestions around it are welcome and appreciated.

Thank you.
Mohit

When I teach Scrum I use a day to day life example. Some situation everybody knows. One of my favourites case of study is a wedding.

Thanks Sergio. Yes, I have already tried the "Wedding" project. The challenge I faced there is on defining the Sprint goal and realizing the value delivered with each increment.

We can have stories like: book a wedding hall, buy outfits for groom & the bride, buy rings etc. but honestly, when you try to understand the value to be delivered with each Sprint, not sure how that can be defined. It surely helped understand the cycle though.

You can look around your own house for a personal project or chores (e.g. "the job jar") to use the framework.

Thanks Kiron. Yes, I am using a new technology that I am learning to build a software enhancement as an example to see how it can be done using Scrum. There surely is some sort of uncertainty, complexity and novelty in it.

Do not concentrate in value, concentrate on what Scrum stated according to Scrum Guide. For example, you are talking about Stories and it is not a line inside the Scrum Guide that said you have to use User Stories. So, my approach is: I will teach Scrum using what ever people like to fill the Scrum framework to create things like what is requested (needs to be translated into requirements). Perhaps your approach is to teach Scrum based on an implementation because of that you are talking about stories. And the last: value is defined for the people that will get the solution not for us. Then, I teach it as a part of the course in the beginning where I show how to define value things in terms of a wedding.

Thanks for the correction and direction. I agree, the learning (or teaching) shouldn't be implementation focused.

You are welcome but please let me say is not a correction. What I wrote is the approach that works for me but it will depends on you client needs. In my case, I always follow that approach but is not easy to talk with a possible customer that has a picture in her/his mind because lot of information outside there.
