I'm relatively new to project management, as someone with limited experience, what the best way to go about it? I tried applying to jobs for similar roles but with no luck.

As a previous operations coordinator, I incorporated what I did with what they're asking for but most of the time the employer want more experience than I currently have.
Are you in a position where you can get the experience employers are looking for?

If not, what kind of opportunities can you create for yourself? Can you find a non-profit charitable organization where you can volunteer as a project manager? Are you building and leveraging your local network to find out about opportunities and get introduced to people who can help in your search? Instead of (or in addition to) applying and interviewing for jobs, ask people on your network if you can interview them about project management at their company (informational interview).

Treat your job search like a combination research project/full time job.

Welcome Midlyn.

I bet you are not so new in PM as you might think.

Did you ever organize a birthday party? Achieve a degree? Go on holiday?

And, learning about PM never stops, so you might chose to read books, blogs like this, watch videos, attend courses - as a habit. Talk with people, get a mentor. The good thing with Corona is that you can now chose mentors from everywhere, globally. The more different from yourself, the better the learning.
Yes I just remembered some of the volunteer work, I did as a coordinator. Might be a stupid question but I don't see how holidays and achieving a degree constitutes to pm.

For me project management is about reducing insecurity and providing safety - to yourself and any stakeholder.

If you have goals and clear the way how to get there, you are planning and if you recognize your planning has flaws, you should be adaptive to better understanding and changing environment.

Project management can be seen as a point of view, a model for survival, a life skill.

In the MBA class I am teaching, I use the journey of getting the degree as a project template.

Makes sense. Probably the best definition to describe it.
