Metric during current pandemic

In this period of pandemic, most of the news items cover numbers - number of tests conducted, number of patients, number of lucky ones, number of unlucky ones, doubling rate etc. And different agencies, political parties are choosing the ones that suit them at that point of time and use them, even if it is out of context.

So, during this period of pandemic, what kind of metrics we, as society (as nation or even globally), should be using which will provide a true picture, guide authorities in taking further action and not create panic in the society?

Great question! I think we are seeing an evolution of metrics from lagging indicators (e.g. number of deaths) to leading indicators (e.g. number of tests conducted) but they are all still focused on the disease itself.

What I'm really interested in seeing are metrics highlighting the downstream impacts of the disease - statistics on secondary illnesses resulting from it or which have been ignored because of fear of being treated and so on.

here is the point. Same data, various analyses, different results.
We may need to analyze the data in our own way based on our unique circumstances
