Hi there,

I have been struggled with understanding the difference between these two concepts for a while. Whenever the correct answer should be one of them, I always chose the other one...Could someone use an example to explain the difference or tips about how you solve such questions?

Thanks.

Defect repair is a an intentional activity to modify a nonconforming product or product component. Immediate action is required to fix the defect, once it has been identified.

Corrective action is when a project has deviated from the project scope. The corrective action is intended to bring the project's performance back into alignment with the agreed-upon project baselines.

The difference between defect repair and corrective action is as below:

1. Defect repair means the products or deliverables were already completed and during inspection there was a deviation in the requirements. The deviation need to be corrected hence it must be repaired (defect repair). The deviation was already happened.

2. Corrective action means during the manufacturing of the product or when checking the burn-down chart, you notice some deviation. So you made a corrective action in order to avoid the non-compliance or delay of the project. It means you prevent a bad situation to happened hence you do some corrective action. The deviation is about to happened if no intervention.

I hope the above explanation is clear.

Defect repair is only applicable for products. During inspection, if there is deviation observed from tolerance or specification, it need to be fixed. It is known as defect repair.
Corrective action is applicable in wider aspect. For example, corrective action for schedule recovery, corrective action for findings during Audit, etc.
Hence, all defect repair can be considered as corrective action. But all corrective action cannot be considered as defect repair.

Hi Tianze,
Just to chip in....
Defect repair arises during inspection after the completion of deliverables while Corrective action arises to put back on track any deviation of product/activity deviation.

Corrective action is wider and engloves defect repair.
Sanjay Dudhat's reply ends with this insightful statement 'Hence, all defect repair can be considered as corrective action. But all corrective action cannot be considered as defect repair'

Defect repair is implemented when the deliverable does not meet the documented quality requirements, and incurs in costs of non-conformance.
Corrective actions are taken when the project has deviated from the scope, schedule, cost, or quality baselines and are intended to bring the project’s performance back into alignment with the plan. These corrective actions incur costs of conformance or non-conformance, depending of the situation.

Taken from the PMI´s Lexicon of Terms:
Corrective Action. An intentional activity that realigns the performance of the project work with the
project management plan.
Defect Repair. An intentional activity to modify a nonconforming product or product component.
Defect Repair is performed on product or product component. That´s is the difference with Corrective Action.
