How do You Motivate Team Members on Troubled Projects?

Every project that is undertaken is filled with hope and optimism that it will be completed successfully. Sometime that happens, sometimes it doesn’t. A project may drag on and on due to technical issues, end up going way over budget, or fall between the cracks because leaders in the organization are on to ‘the next big thing’.

All of the above take a toll on those team members who are assigned to the project and come in day-after-day to get it done. What are some of the ways you have been able to keep team members in these situations motivated, interested, and even inspired?

Well managed projects should not get into deep trouble, the odd teething problem perhaps that could easily be resolved.

Whether the project is running late, has hit problems\issues, or over budget, it is down to the PM to manage every aspect to get things moving, to get things done ASAP. As for the team members they must support the PM and the project in question and play ball, the sooner the project is back on track the better for everyone concerned. A key motivator is communication, tell it as it is. When your team understands what is at stake they are included in the issues they will do their admost to get the tasks done. There is always a solution even if it means a compromise.
