I have read a dozen + threads on this, but I would like to ask it with some personal details to it.

I have my Bachelors in IT Project Management specialty Agile. I have been managing at the field level for years now. Everything from refurbishing the antennas on a Navy Destroyer, to thousands of hours managing gas line refurbishment and inspection projects. More recently I have 3 major impact IT Solutions I have managed and developed as well as led the successful recertification of our vault which has not passed first time up in over 13 years (3-year inspection).

Here is my qualm, I have thousands of hours managing at the floor/technician level, but I have not had the opportunity to manage as a designated manager. I have not had the opportunity to work contracts, proposals or financials.

Due to my lack of experience with said things, should I pursue CAPM instead or rip the band aid off and put forth the extra time for my PMP?

Hi Cory,
Judging by your experience in PM, Go for the PMP... You're qualified for it

Cory -

don't worry about the titles you have held. If you were leading projects and have sufficient experience across the different PMBOK process groups & knowledge areas, you are ready for the PMP.

I agree with my colleagues. You don’t need to have a PM title to be eligible. As long as you were doing PM tasks, that’s what matters.

Given what you mentioned, I believe you certainly qualify to apply for PMP.

Good Lick.

Agreed, go for PMP. As long as you have a current PMP holder in good standing that will endorse your application you should be good to go.

Echoing what everyone else has said, go for the PMP. You don't need to be in an active PM role to start racking up the experience hours for your PMP application. Sounds like you won't have an issue justifying your current experience as PM experience.

@Cory Shipmate, as a Senior Chief and commercial experience you definitely have the experience for PMP. Send me a note if you would like some coaching on this.

Hi Cory, I did my PMP when I was hardly 3-4 project old. If you qualify for the requisite hours as prescribed in the PMP examination guideline along with the 35 contact hours of the formal PM training, supplemented with the will and determination to learn the concepts and put in extra efforts, you are on the right path to gain the coveted PMP title.... All the best!!!
