Hi Guys,

I have been managing software projects for about 10 years delivering projects over waterfall or iterative based models. I have been keen on agile for a couple of years. WIth my contract coming to an end I am keen on my next engagement being agile.

I have been doing some research on the web to find out what a PM like myself who has some basic understanding of agile can do to become an employable agile PM. I have ordered the The Software Project Manager's Bridge to Agility to help me bridge gaps in my mind.

Is there any advice anyone can offer me in my project management journey.

Regards
Prad

Hi. I've written about the dangers of implementing agile and the myths of agile which might help you for some general background. But what I would say is why is it so important for you to work in an agile environment? Agile is a sliding scale, so even if your next job was in a waterfall environment you should be able to bring an agile approach to it.

I agree with Elizabeth. Pick a project and start implementing some Agile development techniques. Develop in iterations, move scope around to fit the timeline, or whatever else would work in your environment.

The Agile purists might say that Agile Project Management is an oxymoron, so you may want to focus on particular techniques like XP or Scrum. I have written more about this here: Does Agile Project Managment Exist?

Thanks Bruce/Elizabeth,

Appreciate your advice. I have been doing some further research and knowledge gathering. The more I have been going through and reading I was starting to see a number of Agile principles I had already introduced in to iterative projects I have managed in the past like daily integrations and testing, working through business critical issues first and quick releases, daily stand up meetings and collaborative problem solving to get over technical issues, etc., all in a time boxed environment.

Thank you so much for your advice.

Prad
