Risks or issues are inherent in any project. As a project manager, it’s your job to predict project risks, then seek and destroy them if possible. So why not ask your client what risks they might see before you even get started? There’s no shame in starting a project with the upper hand! Plus, keeping your clients happy will boost your mood as you keep things on track.

Yes, communications, communication, communications. haha No seriously, if PMs do not know how to communicate properly, then we see a ton of project failures.

I would suggest that risk identification and management is a team assignment and typically would involve the significant stakeholders and project participants. The PM's role is to lead the effort rather than personally take on the task ( ...your job to predict project risks). In a proper workshop setting the client would be expected to participate in the risk and benefit identification and management process. This should not happen "...before you even get started" but as a continuous process. As Bill states - communications.
