New PMP exam and the PMBOK version - mismatched?

Hello,

I have some curious questions w.r.t the new PMP exam.

Based on what I have been reading, in the current state (until PMBOK 7th edition is released), the PMBOK 6th edition is still relevant as a reference book for the new PMP exam. And those planning to take the newer exam now are still referencing that. I totally understand PMBOK is just one of the reference books and not something the exam is solely based on. The exam is based on ECO.

Now, here's what I find a little tricky and confusing:

1. Once the PMBOK 7th edition is released, I would assume the 6th edition would no longer be the reference for the new PMP exam. And, PMBOK 6th is based on processes while PMBOK 7th edition is based on principles (and performance domains). They are distinctly different in the way information is presented in the guide and so, how can both the older and the newer version of the PMBOK be relevant references for the same exam (newer version)?

2. Are the Process groups and Knowledge areas still relevant? I hear they are no longer included in the newer edition. If yes, shouldn't PMI have waited till the release of the 7th edition to switch the PMP exam - if the newer exam is more principle based than process based?

3. I hear non-ATP providers have revised their exam prep content to align with the new exam (but they are still based on the 6th edition). Some say only ATP provided exam prep would be valid going forward while other state even non-ATP courses can be used to claim 35 hours contact hours (and self-study). What's the correct guideline from PMI?

Thank you for your inputs.

Thanks,
Mohit

Mohit -

1. I'd expect a combination of the Seventh Edition and content in Standards Plus will be references. The latter is where the traditional process framework would live.

2. See above.

3. Non-ATP providers can offer PMP prep training and materials, however, PMI does reserve the right to challenge the quality of these non-PMI materials through the standard application audit process. If they are high quality, there shouldn't be any concern.

Thanks Kiron.

Part of my question (#1) was due to the fact that even with the PMBOK 6th edition as reference, some aspirants would be preparing and taking the new PMP exam in coming weeks (untill 7th edition is released). So, if it is valid and helpful in the current form for the new exam content, why come up with 7th edition after the exam change? I know PMI is not projecting the new edition to be the sole resource for the new PMP exam but it surely looks more relevant structure wise. Also, it is logical to use the latest version than an older edition when released...
