I am currently using Smartsheet which works well but my company is getting rid of it. I have used MS Project in the past and it works but has way more than I need and is expensive.

What is a good project management software that is cost effective, can be shared by a small team? I really just need task management, gannt charting and simple resource management.

Check "TeleworkingMonitoring". This tool costs only $5/Month for each Project Dashboard. The only difference with your requirements is that the tasks are organized in a dashboard with headers, and not Gantt Chart, but allows complete management assigning due dates and staff members.
This newfangled project monitoring solution combines agile with global indicators. Every team member can be included in a Trello dashboard, to update the state of his respective tasks. Then, the information is translated into a global indicators panel, that can be shared with management supervisors. I'd also recommend taking a look at some cloud-based PM platforms that offer free versions, specifically those not limited to a trial period.

One that I've used in the past is Wrike, which I found to be very intuitive and flexible. I'm not sure what all you're looking for in the resource management area, but it's worth noting that you won't get timesheet tracking until their "Business" level membership.

Good luck, and send me a message if you'd like to discuss further or take a look at a gap analysis I prepared for a similar decision at my current company.
