Dears,

Can you share your opinions about the best tools or methods to have the right decisions as project manager.

I believe in brainstorming, expert judgement, listen carefully to others. Of course, it depends on the nature of the decision if it is simple and no negative consequencesare expected or it is critical where you the consequences are catastrophic.

Regards,
Riad

Since decisions may be influenced by a variety of factors, one of the key components to sound decision making is identifying what qualities or attributes make a better or worse decision. Then choices such as do nothing, and alternative solution paths may be compared with those critical qualities in mind to help ensure the decision reflects the appropriate criteria.

Is not about a method is about to stay clear on the things you have to decide because is in the project manager scope of work. I saw lot of project managers along the years that take decisions beyond your scope of work which there is no way for not being catastrophic. Why? Mainly because project manager do not have all the information needed.

"Best" is context-specific. In some cases, an anonymized approach such as that leveraging Wideband Delphi is appropriate whereas other times, an open group discussion makes more sense.

When it comes to decision making, we should follow the lesson of waiting till the last responsible moment in most cases to avoid locking ourselves in to what might be a bad decision. This is not an excuse for procrastinating but for maximizing optionality (as Taleb would say...).

The best way is to have a project responsibility matrix that shows who you will consult or ask for their opinion when making decision.

Hello Riad,

On top of what everyone else has said here, you also need to consider the environment you are making the decision in. You can agree that making an autocratic decision in an egalitarian culture would seem... odd, and other way around. Check your environment: maybe the decision can be taken by the team, not by you?
Also if you have a good reliable data, right experts, values you don’t want to harm and a good “why” clear to everyone, whatever technique you’ll use, it will give a good result.

Environment, politics, people, culture, good justification for the decision are very critical factors when taking decisions.
