The Project Manager must have not only a set of hard skills related to Project Management knowledge. It's also fundamental a set of soft skills, that includes leadership, active listening, conflict resolution, overcoming resistance to change, and mainly, do your Project Manager role as a service to others, inspiring them to attain success in a common objective that benefits to all.

Helps understand and sort out potential problems early in the project.
Knowing WHY we are investing in the project. Too often, PMs lose sight of the purpose behind the project and continue to push on even when that purpose is unattainable with the current approach.

I'm with Kiron on this. Stay focused on the objectives of the project. I have been know to stick a notice on the PMO office wall for all to see with the purpose clearly defined - usually copied from the Charter. If an action, proposed action, email or even thought is not advancing the project, put it in the bin.

I believe strongly the key to being a good project manager is Art & Science. If you have one without the other, you are in trouble. So, nail those and you will go a long way. Secondly, you have to understand the value of org change management. Why are we doing these projects and what is in it for "me" (the customer) is so critical. Hope that helps... :)
