A question you may ask is: Talk about one difficult situation you have experienced managing a project, and how you overcame the problem to attain the objectives.

In my personal case I am in charge to interview people that applied for program/project manager positions. My questions are always situational questions based on my current work place program/project management defined process that, by the way, I was part of the group that have defined them. So, in my personal experience along the years, what worked for me is making situational questions in the framework of our defined process to understand how the candidate behave in similar situations. In this way, the onboarding process is shortest.
