Hi, I am currently working as a software developer having around 8 years of experience, recently I earned PMP certification. I am planning to change my career into world of project management but I am confused how to get started, in my current role I don't do PM stuff, I am basically doing code development projects and I don't manage teams or handle budgets etc.
I don't know if I qualify for the PM jobs in the market.
Please advice. Saving Changes...

Rajni,
everybody can become a project manager.
As you have a professional experience and even a PMP you have some prereqs for the next steps. You should have some experience in leading projects too, as you have stated in your PMP application.
So, some tips
- get a mentor
- read and listen to stories of PMs how they started their career
- deep dive into ethics, and the values of honesty, respect, responsibility and fairness - you signed up to PMI's code when you became a PMP.
- volunteer, and use this as a sandbox to hone your PM skills

If you worked in software projects or any other type of projects then you know about to work in projects. If you have to take requirements from people and you have to talk with him to negotiate or being sure that what you develop is what they need then you have manage people. But the key thing is to answer this question, in my personal opinion: have you make people to work for you while you are not their boss/manager and they are working in multiple things beyond what you need they need to do? If you faced that situation then you are qualified.

As a career coach, I suggest you look for a project coordinator role for starters as this role will allow you to be exposed to the various aspects of project management.
On a professional development level, and in parrallel with your PC role, I suggest you do your CAPM as it will equip you with great knowledge in order for you to make sense of what you do in your role day to day.
Hope this helps.

I recently earned PMP certification, I not sure the reason for doing the CAPM certification, please suggest what type of roles I will be looking for, In my current role I work on code development projects, I do work with stakeholders to collect requirements, maintain projects timelines etc. I don't manage budget since most of the projects are internal to the organization.

My apologies, I missed the part where you mentioned you earned your PMP. Given that, there is no point of doing the CAPM.
As for your PM career, Sergio makes a valid point which I will tackle from another angle:
In order to qualify for the PMP, you need between 3 - 5 years of experience doing project management actitives - You don't need to be in a PM Role and neither you do need to be doing everything so I trust when you filled in your application, you did specify what you do or did day to day that relates to project mangement and if so, I don't see why you do believe that you do not qualify ? Please let me know if I am missing something.

Thank you so much for the reply, that's a valid point, my application got approved on the basis of my current experience, basically I do business Intelligence projects for my organization. I guess my problem is I don't know how to get started. When I am managing projects I haven't created much of the projects plans, have no experience with any project management software, no experience in managing large group of people. I have theoretical knowledge of all these project plans which I have studied to clear my PMP exam but I am lacking practical knowledge. Please suggest..

In order to gain that, you need experience so I suggest you look for a project coordinator role. In order to be able to help you further, maybe you can share with us here what did you fill in when you applied for your PMP in terms of experience and as soon as you share this, I will be able to advise better.

Thanks for sharing and you're welcome. All three experiences you shared are the same and very high level (i.e. just naming the process group) but if you did all of this then you are more than qualified.
You also mentioned you don't have experience creating plans but I can see from what you've mentioned that you actually do.
The missing piece is creating a budget but that is not difficult if you have expertise in everything else.
I can't confidently tell from this high level descrpition whether you do have the experience or not but again, if you did all those tasks and were involved in those process groups then you are definitely qualified and you have nothing to worry about.

Thank you so much for the reply, the shared project is from the PMI application which has 500 words requirement for one project If I am planning to get training in project management software, which one would you recommend ?
