Hi, I am currently working as a software developer having around 8 years of experience, recently I earned PMP certification. I am planning to change my career into world of project management but I am confused how to get started, in my current role I don't do PM stuff, I am basically doing code development projects and I don't manage teams or handle budgets etc.
I don't know if I qualify for the PM jobs in the market.
Please advice.

Thanks for sharing and you're welcome. All three experiences you shared are the same and very high level (i.e. just naming the process group) but if you did all of this then you are more than qualified.

You also mentioned you don't have experience creating plans but I can see from what you've mentioned that you actually do.

The missing piece is creating a budget but that is not difficult if you have expertise in everything else.

I can't confidently tell from this high level descrpition whether you do have the experience or not but again, if you did all those tasks and were involved in those process groups then you are definitely qualified and you have nothing to worry about.

Thank you so much for the reply, the shared project is from the PMI application which has 500 words requirement for one project If I am planning to get training in project management software, which one would you recommend ?

You’re welcome. Most project management softwares I am involved in are construction industry specific. We use Procore, Primavera for scheduling. Maybe you can learn about MS Project, it’s easier than Primavera and great tool for planning and scheduling.

Rajni,

I made this switch a few years ago. I think a safe way to start is to identify a small project and volunteer to help leading it. Volunteers for PM-task: coordinate communications, write documentations (especially if your org has templates already), etc.

If your org have PMs, volunteer to help them with things you are comfortable with. Show them and yourself that you can do these things. Then continue to expand by volunteering for more and more complex activities. I think it's hard to get PM jobs with experience, so you'd have to do a fair bit of straddling your actual job and experience-gaining job.

The way I did my transition was that there was no other PM in my organization, but clearly there was needs for at least one. so i took some training courses and sign up for the job. It started with smaller projects and after a few successful ones, the whole thing became real.
