I've seen many good models that can be used. I can't recommend one over another. I'm often of the opinion that the "maturity" of the team or organization isn't really that important. What's more important is continuous improvement. If an assessment model helps identify ways to improve, then it's worthwhile. Otherwise, it's just a meaningless metric. Saving Changes...
Maturity is based on the outcomes, not on outputs or practices. Agility implies three things:
- delivering value at the pace at which your stakeholders demand
- improving quality
- making people awesome
Based on these three outcomes, KPIs could be built specific to the context of a team or division.
How do you all assess Agile maturity in your organisations and what medium/tool is being used for the purpose. Would love to hear your experiences.
I can provide you with some commonly used approaches to assess Agile maturity in organizations and the tools/mediums utilized for this purpose:
1. Agile Maturity Models: Many organizations use established Agile maturity models like the Agile Capability Assessment (ACA), Agile Fluency™ Model, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), etc., to assess their maturity level. These models provide a structured framework with predefined criteria to evaluate and score the organization's Agile practices.
2. Surveys and Assessments: Organizations often conduct Agile maturity assessments through surveys or assessment questionnaires. These surveys may cover various aspects of Agile practices, including team collaboration, product ownership, release management, continuous integration, etc. Tools like Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or internally developed customized tools may be used for this purpose.
3. Agile Health Radar: Agile Health Radar is a visualization tool used to track an organization's Agile progress. It generally consists of a heatmap representing different dimensions of Agile practices and helps teams and organizations assess their overall maturity. Tools like Mural or other virtual whiteboard technologies can facilitate the creation and usage of Agile Health Radars.
4. Agile Coaching and Feedback: Agile coaches and mentors play a crucial role in assessing an organization's Agile maturity. They usually work closely with teams and stakeholders, observe their Agile practices, provide feedback, and suggest areas of improvement. This approach relies heavily on the expertise and experience of Agile coaches rather than specific tools.
5. Project and Product Metrics: Organizations can assess Agile maturity by analyzing project and product metrics, such as lead time, cycle time, team throughput, customer satisfaction, and team stability. Tools like Jira, Azure DevOps, or other project management software can help gather and analyze relevant data.
Ultimately, the choice of approach and tool depends on the organization's specific requirements, scale, and resources. It is often beneficial to combine multiple methods to get a holistic understanding of Agile maturity within an organization. Saving Changes...
