Hi Brain Trust! I am a new member here and planning to undertake the new PMP exam this year. I have been reading about the application process, earning PDUs and importantly about the change in the exam format for this year. I have not yet initiated my application process.

From what I understand, the logical steps to be taken would be:
- Get the PMI global and local chapter membership
- Study the PMBOK - 6th edition (7th edition is not out until late March/April?)
- Do a course from accredited PMI ATP in order to secure 35 training hours
- Fill the application form
- Schedule the exam

Is there anything I am missing here? Any other pointers or suggestions at this very early stage of planning?
Is it suggested to wait until the 7th edition of the PMBOK is out, perhaps, to study for the new format of the exam?

Thank you.

For the most part Your understanding is correct. However, you don’t need to be a member of a local chapter, that’s optional and neither it is a must to be a PMI paid member, but you can benefit a lot from being a paid PMI member.

As for the resources, the new PMP exam doesn’t depend on one resource, but on many as mentioned in the list of resources listed under the PMP e am of which PMBOK6th edition is one of those resources.

Hope this helps.

Couple of other things I'll add to Rami's feedback:

1. The 7th edition of the PMBOK Guide will not have an immediate impact on the content of the exam. Over time, there may be questions added directly referencing it but not in the short term.

2. Joining PMI as a member does give you a discount on the PMP exam which is almost the same as the annual membership costs which is why many folks elect to join PMI for at least one year when they plan to get their PMP credentials.
