I don't feel there are new challenges but the existing challenges of working with dispersed team members and stakeholders have increased as it is now the norm rather than the exception to the rule.

Veronica,

are we still successful? Yes, absolutely. As humans and especially as PMs we are used to respond to changes and exploit opportunities. Remote teams gave us opportunities (more efficiency, more forgivingness, less ego-conflicts, more globalisation, perspectives) and challenges.

The main challenge for me is how to build and lead a team remotely, that means without being able to meet the members face to face, look them in the eyes, smell them, touch them etc. - we lack the full range of human connection.

Still we need to establish trust, align on targets, get commitment, show respect, be fair etc. - but now with a restricted set of leadership instruments. This means to do it very much consciously, planned, disciplined, while with face to face we often just did it.

I would like to echo the sentiments so very well elaborated here.
As PMs things become a lot easier when the project team likes you. There is a significant however intangible benefit of having good relationships with the team. Most people behave professionally and thus even remotely its never a problem having a good working relationship but the human connect has lessened.

Another thing I would like to mention here is that following up F2F is more effective. Previously I would just walk up to people's desk to check on the status of a project task. The F2F conversation helped build a better connect with the team and was an effective means of following up on things.
Now we are restricted to chat/mail and other online methods which have their own advantages but aren't as effective as meeting F2F

“Working from home”, one of the new normals that the pandemic has brought to economic life, is being adopted by more and more companies. frankly, i think it was successful. we are in the age of technology; There is the internet, there are video talking methods, there are both home and mobile phones. Really a lot of people don't even need to go to the office, at least not every day.
