i wanted to highlight early warnings in any type of project -- development/agile/testing etc. Can you please provide any examples for the same so that the project team can take preventive action

basically risks, but forewarning the project team that the issue may happen.

any inputs are appreciated.

An early warning sign that your schedule might slip is when someone makes commitments about how long testing will take without understanding the types of issues that will be encountered, how long they will take to resolve, or the potential that fixing one issue will result in another. The likelihood of this happening increases in relation to the amount of customization and technical debt in the system.

Actually, having a highly customized system and/or a large amount of technical debt are warning signs by themselves.

Thanks a lot Aaron for the response.
i want to come up with detailed list in projects so that we can project it -- can be related to resources, effort , schedule variance etc

Hi Santosh,

Since phases are mentioned in your title I'd better begin by saying "phased" development is a significant warning sign. Iterative delivery scoped by features rather than phases is what you should aim for.

Lack of customer engagement and product ownership are probably the most common causes of problems in software development.

Other red flags: long release cycles (greater than about 10 working days, say); "sign off" for requirements or designs before testing; milestone dates other than feature releases.

Finally I'd suggest that managing the "project" rather than the product is also a problem. Aim to get software product management right and project management should no longer be an issue.

There are two types of early warning (or risk and issues) you can get: external and internal. Both have to be created based on the environment where the project will be run. About externals you can search into the internet mainly for PESTLE analisys and Porter Five Forces analisys related your environment. Places like government and some banks or financial institutes published them. About internals, is up to you to make the research but you can find information about organizations similar to you and the challenge they are facing when try to run projects similar to the project you will run.

This really depends on the nature of your project and your delivery approach. With certain projects, tools such as EVM might provide that early warning whereas with others, consistently delivering fewer work items in a fixed amount of time than planned might work. I'd also keep an ear to the ground as far as stakeholder dissatisfaction goes as that is often an early warning sign of trouble brewing.
