Are you a stressed project manager? Not surprisingly, project management can be incredibly stressful. We're responsible for delivery on time, on budget and scope but often have to deal with limited or poorly equipped resources, unrealistic client expectations and a to-do list that could easily reach the moon and back.

I'd like so stress the following. There are two types of stress:

- Good stress or what psychologists refer to as "eustress," is the type of stress we feel when we are excited.

- Bad stress comes from quick surprises that need a response. The triggers aren't always happy and exciting.

Is PM stressful? Hopefully so, with lots of good stress.

Good answer! Lots of good stress.

One of the compliments that I got from an executive was "I'm less stressed when I know that you are leading xxx strategy program". Bringing peace in mind and that they trust you to deliver their strategy is good stress for me

It really depends how the PM handles it. It could be stressful if the team can't delivery on time or within budget, and lots of pressure from stakeholders. On the other hand I see some PMs handle the pressure well, the outcome is not a solo reflection of the PM, but the project team, it helps to take some pressure off

i do agree with you, but for solving and to not face such issues during the project that is why PM is hired and PM should care of such things.

If you are not in a position to deny undertaking a project that according to the pmi principles is problematic or impossible, then it will definitely lead to a lot of stress until it finally fails.

It is stressful by nature because stress in people like stress in physics is an internal resistance to change by some outside force.

If I were to bend a tree branch, stress is the internal force trying to bend the branch back to it's original shape. Similarly stress in people is our own internal reaction to external forces bringing us out of our "comfort zones".

Not all stress is bad. That internal energy may be focused. If I stress a stick and attach a string, I have a bow which is a powerful tool that can focus that internal energy on a target. If I am anxious about a project outcome, that anxiety may motivate me to focus on the intended outcome.

Different people deal with different types of stress in different ways, but if you never experienced stress, you would have no reason to change and grow.
Love that!

Project Managers are the conduit engineers for transforming potential into progress between those in the position of creating vision and those in the position of executing on that vision. The tremendous amount of accountability, responsibility and in some contexts culpability that comes into play when working each side of the progress equation can result in a very stressful environment for project managers, especially if they lack confidence, knowledge and high emotional intelligence.
