Hello

Has someone taken PMI's e-course Disciplined Agile Scrum Master to gain the DASM certification?

https://www.pmi.org/shop/p-/elearning/disc...um-master/el005

Is the format similar to the Agile Hybrid Project Pro MC e-course? Or the Organizational transformation foundation MC e-course?

Regards,
Chantal

I started the e-course.
1- Be aware that the book Choose your WOW is available as a pdf file. You do not need to buy the book beforehand separately.

2- A study guide is available as a pdf file, as well as a glossary.

3- Module 1 is about Agile. It's source and the DA lingo superimpose on what you already know of the cycle such as in the SCRUM framework.

I like the flow of the Module 1. It is more interactive I would say than the AH-MC beta course I took earlier this year. The animation with its reading, videos, pop quizzes, though points, is interesting and keeps you moving along.

The challenge with such an on-demand course is that while it might help you pass the DASM certification exam, it won't provide the opportunity to explore with other learners and an experienced DA instructor how to apply the toolkit within your organization's or team's context.

If the former is your primary focus, no issue, otherwise you'd benefit more from the latter.

Thank you Kiron for your insight. Indeed, an interactive class with instructor and participants is always better than an e-course.

At the moment, I'm curious about the content of the toolkit. The e-course allows me to do explore at my own pace.

As I progress in the e-course, I shall give feedback here so people who are thinking about buying this course have a basic knowledge of its content and how it unfolds.

Hi Chantal,
I am following this thread, and I am curious to know how it is going. I am trying to make up my mind whether to take a CSM certification, or go for the DASM certification.

Regardless of whether you go the live or on-demand route, I'd value the DASM over the CSM from a knowledge perspective as it will give you a much broader perspective than you'd get otherwise.

However, if you do a Google search there are way more hits for CSM references so it comes down to the intelligence of the recruiter or hiring manager as well as your purpose in seeking a credential.

Hello Rasheed,

My understanding is that CSM from ScrumAlliance focuses on the Scrum framework. I preferred to go for PSM I from Scrum.org because it's closer to The Scrum Guide of Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, the originators of Scrum. If you want to learn SCRUM, then they are the route to follow. I suggest you research both, there are blogs that compare CSM versus PSM I and even against PMI-ACP.

Whereas Disciplined agile (DA) from PMI provides a toolkit to help the ScrumMaster/Team lead help their team succeed. Disciplined agile (DA) has lifecycles based on Agile and LEAN. So it's not focus on SCRUM.

DASM is the basic certification and explores the foundation of DA : lifecycles, mindset (principles, promises, guidelines), and an introduction to Way Of Working (WOW) composed of process goals, with a collection of decision points leading to lists of potentiel practices or strategies to address a situation.

You can visit PMI's website for an overview of DA : https://www.pmi.org/disciplined-agile/start-here

Hope this helps. Regards, Chantal

I finished the e-course and succeeded in the DASM exam.

The other modules of the e-course were similar to Module 1, quite interactive. Visuals, videos, pop quizzes, readings, etc.

Earlier last week in the Handouts, I could access two more ressources which are no longer available. Not even in the resources accessible within each module. I just checked all 9 modules and nothing. They were both quite useful to me.

There was
- an activity workbook
* It contained some exercices some in the form of flashcards as well as a printed version of almost all the process goal diagrams.
- the slides of what I assume is a DASM 2-day workshop deck
* I watched the e-course and took notes on the slides and/or the study guide.
* It also contained different exercices than the ones in the e-course

The Choose you WoW book was available only in the resources not the Handouts section. And it was version 1.1 only. Whereas on the previous learning platform (from memory, it changed in April 2020), I could access both versions 1.1 and 1.2.

As of July 11th, the Choose your Wow Book available within the Handouts is now version 1.2 «Covid update» from July 2020. In the resources, it is still version 1.1.

The Study guide is available in both the Handouts and the resources. While the Glossary is available in the resources of the modules.

I presumed these changes are due to the release of version 5.2 of the DA Tool kit on July 9th. See this post in the Disciplined agile LinkedIn group https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:l...355729535791104

For my study, I used the e-course and the Choose you WoW book :

1 - I watched the modules and took notes, and consulted PMI’s DA website for more information (https://www.pmi.org/disciplined-agile)
2 - I read Choose your WoW version 1.2, updating my notes, and consulted PMI’s DA website for more information
3 - I watched the modules a second time, updating my notes
4 - I re-read Choose your WoW a second time but without reading all the options tables.
5 - Before the exam, I read through my notes.

And voilà!

You should checkout the :
- DA hub : https://www.pmi.org/disciplined-agile
- Version control of DA : https://www.pmi.org/disciplined-agile/ip-a...sciplined-agile
- DA release notes : https://www.pmi.org/disciplined-agile/ip-a...e-release-notes
- If you are a PMI member, you can download the Choose your Wow book (still v1.1): https://www.pmi.org/disciplined-agile/books/dad-handbook

Hopes this helps.

Hi Chantal,
Thank you so much for updating us on how you went through the DASM. Especially with the little information around passing the certificate.

I am intending to start the e-course as well. I would like to inquire and confirm about one point from you and it's regarding studying the choose your WOW book for DASM. Have you gone studying all the book? and have you found it mandatory? or as mentioned to review the WOW key areas that address learning objectives and those are mapped against certain chapters in the WOW book? I would appreciate shedding some light on this (and those chapters) since I found the book quite sizable for the DASM as an introductory certificate.

Best regards.

Hello Mohamed,

I just rechecked the DASM e-course, and in the Handouts section you will find the :
- DASM student guide
- Choose your WoW book v1.2
- DASM resources which is a zip file containing the activity booklet and reference deck I talked about in my previous post.

So it seems PMI has updated or revamped that section of the e-course in between me finishing the course, writing my post in July and now.

As for the Choose your Wow book versus the exam content.

The e-course follows pretty much the structure of the first 6 chapters which in my view are mandatory to understand the underpinnings of DA. The exam had questions on the DA concepts from lifecycles, to the R&R of a DA Team, the GIC concept, as well as MBI/MVP and such. So you must read those chapters.

Then the e-course explores the tailoring of your team's WoW through the 3 phases of a lifecycle Inception, Construction and Transition plus the overarching 'phase' of Ongoing. This is where you will learn how the process goals, process diagrams, decision points help you tailor your WoW.

For the exam I read the rest of the book which explains ALL the process goals with all the decision points and options table including the trade-offs.

From my point of view, for the DASM exam I did not need to read in such detail those chapters.

The e-course does not go either in details. It uses the process goals like Form Team/Improve quality, to help you understand how to tailor a team's WoW in the contexte of each phase of a lifecycle.

As I wrote earlier, I like the quizzes, the somewhat flashcards, etc in the e-course. But to be in an exam mindset, I also used an exam simulator on Udemy. You can find a few out there.
