Rolling out Project Sponsorship

I've recently joined a growing community bank, and they are bringing project management in-house for the first time. This means that I've had to start from the ground up with project management best practices, and I'm trying to focus on the most important things first to help us create a solid foundation for project management.

Question for the PM Community: has anyone implemented project sponsorship in an environment where that role doesn't currently exist?

I've built out a solid role definition and created a case for why it's important and have some initial support. What I want to get some input on is: how do you get potential sponsors familiar with what this role entails so they can be successful? Would you start by assigning project sponsors and training executive team members as they're selected? Would you have a broad-scale training so everyone is aware? Is there something else you would do to set the sponsor bench up for success? Thanks for any insights/thoughts you may have!

like it, this is the right thing to get on board the right groups of people: sponsors and project managers. I did my first sponsor workshop in 1998.

It ran 2 days with the 8 department leads of an IT organization. It is important for you to have a sponsor yourself, who starts the workshop with his/her expectations to the group.

Second, the leads are probably confident, so let them work out what should be done as a sponsor, let them show reasons why some of the projects in their departments failed and what is common to the failures and what could be the cure (project management). The outcome was a joint commitment for some tasks, including accepting agreed role of a sponsor, for each of the group and for the PMO. Subsequently, PMO support was offered, e.g. for writing the charters.

I personally like the sponsor standard by GAPPS as a structure.
And Alfonso Bucero is teaching about this and co-authored a book.

It would be an amazing benefit to identify who the project sponsors are.

You may have to implement different levels of training: base-level training for creating a basic project sponsorship competency followed by individual training/coaching as they take on the project sponsor role.
