Hi Vasoula,

My exact question is to get answer for following questions :

1 - A company can be PROJECT based or ROLE based, does the size of company play a role on this matter?

2 - In PROJECT based company along the way EMPLOYEES will have more experience in different tasks like testing, development, analysis and etc, however they MIGHT not have the best QUALITY of the world in their roles, elsewhere in ROLE based company you will be specialist in a specific ROLE and you will have more QUALITY in what are you doing. What is your idea about this?

3 - What are the factors to be taken care while shifting from PROJECT based to ROLE based company?

Hi Hossein

Your topic is very wide, there are many answers depending and it would be interesting to get comments from other people too.

1 - A company can be PROJECT based or ROLE based, does the size of company play a role on this matter?

Companies are both Project based and Role based.
The size of the organisation may dictate whether in reality Project based roles are a requirement; for small companies Project based it is not formally set-up as they may utilise the Role based knowledge, skills to project based roles. Role based company provides the link between activities and the strategic goals and objectives of the organisation. Project based is usually created when there is a technological development and market requirements that pushes the company to create products, services hence the project based roles i.e. Project Management organisation.

Project based like you say has the joint effort among several teams, but do people really understand Quality there is definitely a weakness in my opinion - the best option is to ensure there is a strong Quality Control and Quality Assurance to ensure a certain level of quality. Every organisation has Quality Control and Quality Assurance teams their role is to identify products or services that do not meet a company's specified standards of quality. For clarification Quality Control activities are focused on the deliverable itself and Quality Assurance activities are focused on the process used to create the deliverable. They both must be performed to ensure that the deliverables meet the customer's quality requirements. Quality teams must form part of the Project based company for all Projects.

3 - What are the factors to be taken care while shifting from PROJECT based to ROLE based company?

Role based is a specific role within an organisation, I really do think it depends on the person whether they are knowledgeable, hold the right skills and have the right mindset for such a role. If the person fits the role profile but do not have all knowledge\skill sets to perform the role 110% further training and development, coaching for performance must be encouraged and provided.

In my own career development over a number of years I started in Role based jobs, from Managing Standards development; IT Manager; Assets Manager and eventually moved into a Project based role as Project Manager - all my previous Role based jobs made it possible for me to move into into a Project Management job role relatively quickly.

Hi Hossein, Yes, I think Vasuola has rightly commented that is indeed a very wide topic and I will try to put how I read the scenario.

1 - I don't thnik so. It is entirely on how the company wants to grow and sees itself developing as a bigger and more profitable organization. In the same company there can be both groups co-exist and do both project and role based activities. Where I work, we have both sets of smaller organizations within the larger organization. I have seen when companies start to grow they tend to see what fits the best to the client and improving their own efficiency in doing the same business with a lesser cost and that decides how the company/ org should look like.

2 - This is correct in a way and that is the thought process I think the company wants the customer to get. End of the day it is the customer who we need to look at and they need to see every organization as a 'specialised services' org who can give them the best solution and deliver with excellence. Project based organization do give an employee a wider feel as you mention but considering business needs to focus more towards the customer, I see more and more role based organizations.

3 - Identifying what roles that you need to specialise for and if you are adequately resourced to do that. The moment you are into a role based organization you would be looked as specialists/ champions on that and would need that amount of expertise to ensure client satisfaction. What you also need to consider I think in the current scenario is looking long term to a lot of attrition as people tend to get bored doing the same job for long duration and not able to do mustitask/ do multiple roles. Moving to a role based organization definitely will mean a leaner organization and fewer growth prospects which again might lead to atrition in the long run but on the flipside gives employees to become champions on their respective domain/ expertise area.

Hi Sunando,

1 - Well explained.

2 - Agree, role based companies are easier to manage as you will have to do less training as people are very familiar with their tasks/jobs.

3 - Very detailed answer, thank you.

Cheers,
Hossein
