If you are interested in the PMI operating procedures for ANSI approved standards, make sure you take the opportunity to review and comment on the proposed changes.

The PMI (Organization) - Project Management Institute, an ANSI Member and Accredited Standards Developer, has submitted revisions to its currently accredited operating procedures for documenting consensus on PMI (Organization)-sponsored American National Standards, under which it was last reaccredited in 2020.

As the revisions appear to be substantive in nature, the reaccreditation process is initiated.

I have now had the opportunity to review the proposed revision to PMI's operating procedures for documenting consensus on PMI (Organization)-sponsored American National Standards.

This proposed revision is significant change - not necessarily bad but definitely significant change. If you have an interest in the procedures PMI will use for how they obtain consensus on key standards such as The Standard for Project Management, I encourage you to take a look and provide your feedback.

This is actually a PMI procedure required to be in place by ANSI to govern PMI's process for complying with ANSI's essential requirements for Accredited Standards Developers. It only applies to standards that will be published not only as a PMI standard but also an ANSI accredited standard.

There is another internal procedure PMI uses for drafting all PMI standards, guides, and frameworks. This procedure is not open to the public but it is the one that sets up drafting committees and guides activities such as PMI's Public Exposure Draft process.

This second procedure, though not released in a public view, is influenced by the ANSI procedure that is currently out for comment. Though PMI members have no viable way to comment on the internal procedure, by submitting comments on the ANSI procedure you do have some ability to influence both.

Again, if you have an interest in how PMI procedures are drafted and consensus voting attained, I encourage you to reach out to Lorna Scheel, PMI's Standards Compliance Specialist, to obtain a copy for comment.
