Should a high school graduate get the CAPM?

I graduate high school in a month, and I'm concerned about which career path I should take. I enjoy helping people, and I think I would perform better in a company setting rather than a skill or profession-based setting. Anyways, I want to take the Google Project Management Career Certification course, and then study the PMBOK 17 when it comes out in August. If I manage to obtain my CAPM, will the coursework I do and the CAPM help me find a job? If not, is there another affordable field to get into or another option for me to get into this field? (like Coursera's iMBA)

It would be very difficult to land any kind of PM entry role right out of school. Most PMs will start with gaining a few years of hands-on experience as a contributor in project and/or operations work before they look at moving into the PM career path.

The CAPM won't hurt and will certainly help you gain a good understanding of PMI's stance on project management, but at this stage of your career, it is unlikely to land you a job.

Stanley,

great to hear you are interested in a PM career. I started mine in 1988 after 14 years of experience in SW development and systems engineering.

The options to start with PM right from school are changing. Have you seen PMI's free course 'kickoff', gives you a glimpse what to do when you start a project.

And there is even a new class and certificate for students:

Good luck. And get a mentor.

In this day and age it is generally agreed that you need a post-secondary education to join the professional ranks. There are exceptions I'm sure but the probability is very low.

Project Management is a complement of your professional skills in some area of industry or knowledge. You must first specialize in a labor you are good for, and then scale and acquire knowledge of how to manage projects related to your professional field.
