Now that PMBOK7 is out, is it going to be the knowledge base on which the exam be based on or would it still remain based on PMBOK6 till sometime in future?

This is an interesting and different approach that PMI are taking on this front with this new edition. It could make it a bit challenging for exam takers but I guess at the end, it comes down to experience.

Thanks for sharing this info with us.

Rami,

These are exactly my thoughts and every cert across industries explicitly expect you to have experience (even though, in many cases, it differs from what the exam body actually evangelizes, so experience alone is rather insufficient) but they also release new exam outlines and updated exam content in alignment with a new edition book, down to the chapters, so candidates can best completely transition (at a certain announced date) away from the old and focus their study efforts on new release details (some of which come from the previous edition). But I feel that what's going on here isn't helpful to anyone at all.

Hey Kiron,

In my experience with several other certifications from other industries, this is simply a confusing and an unusual approach. The normal process is to gather all relevant content from the old edition, include updates and new concepts to produce the new edition single book to help candidates transition and focus.
But this current approach just makes it unclear and does not say when a complete transition/cut over date is but when update of exam items will "start" and doesn't seem like we're supposed to move on from the 6th edition at all in the first place. So, what's the point of an incomplete new edition that does not transition us completely away from the previous edition? At this point, I'm simply paralyzed about taking any of these exams due to all of this.

J
I agree, that's why I am a bit surprised from this new approach but it might be PMI's new way of agility in keeping their exams up to date.

I believe PMI will announce this soon but usually they give a grace period between the time they issue a new revision of a guide and the time they reflect the new guide in the exam.
May I ask usually how long time for the grace period as I am preparing for the PMP EXAM now. thanks.

I followed up with PMI with a question asking "what date exactly do candidates need to expect a full and complete transition from the 6th edition to the 7th edition as far as exam content goes so candidates can best focus preparation efforts...?" and I got the following response (note that it doesn't use the words "full" or "complete" transition, which makes me unsure of what to make of the use of the word "effectuated"):

"The transition from the 6th edition of the PMBOK Guide to the 7th edition regarding exam content will be effectuated on 01 August 2021, when the 7th edition of the guide it's released. For the PMP exam content reference, we always recommend you to review the latest edition."

I have subsequently asked when the community should expect an official public announcement to this effect and hope to have a clarifying email response (while we wait and see what happens on August 1).

The response I got did not address my question but instead sent me this link; https://www.pmi.org/pmbok-guide-standards/about/current-projects for all updates/announcements, where I found the FAQ released this month that makes it clear that the exam will not change and that the PMBOK aren't exam prep tools but 'references'.

The fact is laid out in question 15 of the FAQ document released this month (and question 17 simply the disorganization more glaring):
https://www.pmi.org/-/media/pmi/documents/...e8-daaf5ea2b13d

Conclusion: Seek other updated books for exam prep. Even then, since the exams could start getting updated with 7th edition content from August 1, according to a rep but not mentioned in the FAQ or anywhere on the PMI website, you'd most likely also have to get through the 7th edition too. It's a complete mess especially when you realize that it's coming from what's supposed to be a 'PM' authority.

The two editions of the guide are complementary - one does not replace the content in the other. As the new edition is principle and not process-centric, there has been no addition of any processes or knowledge areas within the PMBOK framework, and hence the contents of the Sixth Edition will continue to be relevant for exam questions. What I would expect is at some point they may add questions related to some of the new content in the Seventh Edition but that wouldn't be process or ITTO related.

Kiron
Hey Kiron,

See questions 2 & 4 on the current FAQ document (released on July 1) about the relegation of older 6th edition concepts such as ITTOs but still mentioned in various areas of the 7th edition: https://www.pmi.org/-/media/pmi/documents/...e8-daaf5ea2b13d

This is what authors are already saying that not having to memorize all these process-heavy concepts and instead focusing on understanding value delivery concepts is the new direction, which makes sense but it doesn't seem that PMI is ready to make a clean break from the the 6th edition as questions 15 and 17 of the same FAQ doc indicate.
