I am interested in finding out key lessons learned around testing mobile applications on any platform. Anyone care to share their experiences? Thanks Saving Changes...

Hi Ronan,
When testing a mobile application on different platforms it is important to understand the specific support programs by the different vendors out there. While there has been so much talk about unifying standards on the different mobile platforms, I personally don't see the day that would happen. Vendors are hesitant to adopt certain standards as some of them reason that this would erode their competitive advantage in the market. Hence there's not much of unified standards in the realm of software support.
Building mobile applications is really a jungle of sorts as you're not only considering the operating platforms that are available, but you're also going to need to consider the hardware as well in some cases (depending on the kind of software you're building).
From our experience, when you want to test your software on platforms, the first thing you want to do is IDENTIFY the platforms of preference. You would need to strategically figure out on which platform you would prefer to play on. After having identified this, concentrate much of your effort on getting your software to work on the selected platforms. But the key is to ensure that you have proper support for your software on the selected platforms. Saving Changes...
I've found the hardest thing is getting a good cross-section of devices to test against. With all the OS's, versions and devices there are thousands of combinations.
There is a service called Device Anywhere (you can look them up on the web) that provides all kinds of devices/OS's for virtual testing. It's not perfect, but it's easier than assembling all the combinations and permutations on your own. Saving Changes...
