I am currently making a generic Project Management Guideline for our company. However, since the 7th Edition PMBOK is very different from the 6th Edition, I am a bit confused on how to start.

Can anyone please advice me on what I should use, the principles/or the domains?

If it is guidelines and not specific prescriptive advice, then I'd suggest the principles would be more relevant as those are designed to be applied to any project in any context whereas specific information in the domains sections might only apply to certain types of projects.

Danica,

hello, I am confused too. Still making up my mind about the usefulness of ed7 for organizations (and individuals).

ed6 was used to build many organization-specific methodologies, combined with life cycles. These methodologies or guidebooks were often based on processes, which means ed6. Basically, based on ed6 a template of a project management plan has been provided to make it easy for PMs to setup a project.

Looking at the principles in ed7 , they may not easily align with company-specific cultures, if you do not want to change this with a PM guide, it should prevail. Domains are quite similar to knowledge areas, but are lacking the framework given by the processes.

I agree. Following the process groups for the guideline was easier and more straightforward.

I would start by trying to narrow down the scope. You could spend a career writing PM guidelines. If you are describing general requirements and procedures for a large organization with many different project types and different lifecycles, your product will look very different than if it is for a smallish PMO with fairly regular throughput and mature processes. On one end of the spectrum is more philosophic, and the other is more prescriptive process guidance.
