Seeking input / feedback based on your experience - What orientation and onboarding activities have been most critical to a successful engagement with a contracted PM?

Elaboration: New employees receive specific "new hire" trainings and onboarding to the organization / department, there is a standard process for transitioning to a new PM on a project, but the process for bringing a new consultant up to speed on a project is not currently standard. From your experience (either as PM or as the person doing the onboarding), what was the most value-add activity or discussion when orienting and onboarding a new consulting PM? What was the most impactful if missed?

I wouldn't distinguish between contract and staff PMs when it comes to onboarding. If you want them to be successful, understanding standard policies & procedures and getting a warm introduction to their peers, key stakeholders and sponsors is critical.

The problem with outside people is not regarding project management (I am assuming you make the necessary steps to validate that). The problem with this people is to understand the way project management is implemented inside the organizations which usually is too far of performing project management "by the book". So, before hiring them, put on the table what does mean project management in your organization.
