I am considering starting as a consultant with support of other PMs to deliver business process improvements. Would you be willing to take on short term projects?

In general, I find the "short" projects to be more of an administrative function where I can make very little difference, so to me personally they are not appealing. However for many people they can be rewarding because of the sense of accomplishment (project completion in a short amount of time) and fulfilling what is actually a necessary role on the project.

Short projects may be high intensity also, making them unsuitable for side work. I have frequently taken on projects in response to an emergent problem requiring a quick solution, and they will often consume all of my time at a minimum through the initial solution development and planning, if not through the duration of the project.

Business process improvements make sense to be more of a short term project, and for me they absolutely appeal to me. I like being able to make an impact and then move on to something else.

Agree but these types of project are normally run by the analyst doing the BPI. There is no real reason to have a PM on such a project.

It depends on the project/organization/rate... some of the "short" projects that I participated I took the firefighter role, project under budget, late in schedule... there were a learning experience but now I will be more careful with the "Short request"

Hi Mirek, I would be interested. However, it will depend on the project.

Depends on the definition of 'short'. Generally no. For many reason but typically having formal project management on a 'short' project is overengineering and creates a lot of issues i.e. no time to understand stakeholders, scope, environment etc.
