The PMP 2021 exam based on PMBOK 6th edition or on 7th edition?

linkedin twitter facebook   Aerospace and Defense
Hi,

I had completed the PMP exam preparation course based on PMBOK 6th Edition.

Now the current PMBOK revision is 7th edition.

7th edition has different contents if we compare with 6th edition.

So which edition should I prefer for PMP exam, 6th or 7th?

I will be going to schedule the exam in Jan 22.

Request you to guide on same.

I believe the exam will be based on the ECO (Exam Content Outline) and not a specific version of the PMBOK which makes both 6th and 7th editions relevant beside other resources mentioned by PMI.

I believe PMI are taking a more agile approach this time. Good Luck !

I agree with Rami, both PMBOK versions 6th and 7th are taken into account for PMP exam.

Sachin -

In the near term, the Sixth Edition is what you should stick with as it is the edition referenced in the list of PM reference books which PMI provides for the exam. However, over time, there will start to be some questions created in the overall exam pool which might reference Seventh Edition content. How soon that will happen is anyone's guess so to be safe, I'd review both but the emphasis should remain on the Sixth Edition along with other references on PMI's list.

Hello Sachin,

I passed my PMP exam 12 days ago. To prepare for the exam I referred to PMBOK 6, PMBOK 7, and Agile Practice Guide.

The exam included agile concepts. It is important for the test taker to be familiar with the agile delivery approach. I primarily practiced the waterfall method in my projects. So, I had to spend more time familiarizing myself with the nuances of the agile approach.

My personal opinion is that PMBOK 6 is a great book to refresh your understanding of traditional project management with inputs, tools & techniques, and outputs. PMBOK 7 focuses on the project management principles and it builds on those principles using the project performance domain. Understanding these principles and applications helps in answering situational questions.

Therefore, going through PMBOK 7 will be of immense help in attempting the exam.

Hello Tiong,

Thank you.

The exam is mostly MCQs. However, matching the left column to the correct element on the right column also appeared. Ensure that you understand the diagrams such as tables and charts in the PMBOK. They help in answering these questions.
