Never heard of Spider project, but I have no Russian exposure.

How do you like it? How does it compare to the others?

Most common in the surveys I've seen is the various components of the MS Office tool kit. Even though they are many EPM/PPM tools as well as best-of-breed point solutions, most organizations outside of the construction engineering industry stick with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint with Project for scheduling OR use the native PM capabilities of an industry-specific framework (e.g. an Integrated Development Environment tool in software development often has PM capabilities).

I agree that Office is most frequently used. It is the most universally exchangeable set of documents. Like the classic Swiss Army Knife, it has all the basic functionality you need for most routine things, and some quite impressive capabilities with skilled users.

Even when using other purpose-built PM software that integrates more information in one tool, there are a lot of situations where creating some custom tool or deliverable can be done relatively easily using Office even if it is not the most elegant of solutions.

Hi Patrick,
Spider Project is most functional project management software that is widely used in Russia and today has customers in 36 countries.
It is an integrated project, program and portfolio management tool that includes everything that can be needed for project modelling including risk simulation. It has a lot of unique features like quantity based scheduling, skill scheduling, schedule optimization and more. Demo version of Spider Project that has 40 activities per project limitation can be downloaded from http://www.spiderproject.com/index.php/spiderproject/spiderdemo

MS Project is the gold standard in my experience.

If you have a large portfolio of projects in a services organization, it has challenges being a standalone tool. Professional Services Automation (PSA) tools (Open Air, Financial Force, etc) are becoming more popular but scheduling capabilities are limited in comparison. I foresee the scheduling capabilities to grow in these tools to meet the needs in the future.
